How to Implement Electronic Healthcare Technology
to Improve Patient Care and Improve Your Bottom Line
Electronic healthcare
technology developments and particularly e-prescribing, are at the
forefront of solutions being embraced by health and managed care
organizations.
Stimulating the growth
and keen interest in e-Healthcare technology is the Medicare
Prescription Act that mandates e-Prescribing by 2008 with the first
deadline due date of 2005.
"How to Implement
Electronic Healthcare Technology to Improve Patient Care and Improve
Your Bottom Line," a new executive-level tele-briefing sponsored by
Health Resources Publishing, was held Thursday, November 18, 2004 at
1:30 PM Eastern (New Jersey) time.
The healthcare industry
has been experiencing tremendous activity in health information
technology. Electronic medical records (EMRs) and ePrescribing systems
promise higher quality and safety of patient care, and more cost and
time-efficient healthcare delivery.
The goal of this program
is to show participants ways to implement e-healthcare technology to
comply with the federal requirements mandated for the adoption of
electronic health records, nationwide e-prescribing mandates, and other
health information technology requirements.
E-prescribing will
become a critical tool as a result of the Medicare reform act. "The EMR
will gain wider acceptance due to the e-prescribing push," one expert
told MCIC. "The adoption of standards for EMRs will boost physician
adoption."
BACKGROUND:
The National Health Information Infrastructure, created by President
Bush in an Executive Order, is a 10-year initiative to transform
healthcare delivery by building a new health information
infrastructure, including electronic health records and a new network
to link health records nationwide.
As part of the Centers
for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) initiatives to promote
the adoption of electronic health records and nationwide electronic
drug prescribing, the agency plans to introduce an Internet-based
portal for people with Medicare to access their claims information. The
CMS effort aims to accelerate the e-prescribing timeline mandated by
the Medicare Modernization Act of 2004 (MMA), and encourage the
adoption of electronic health records (EHR) systems, particularly in
physicians’ offices.
The MMA provides that
e-prescribing based on national standards be mandatory for drug plans
participating in the new Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit by
2009, although CMS expects to require an initial set of
well-established standards by January 2006 when the Medicare benefit
begins.
