The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued the long awaited final rule revising the conditions of participation (CoPs) that hospices must meet to participate in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. The rule was published in the June 5 Federal Register.
The revised hospice conditions of participation rule focuses on a patient-centered, outcome-oriented, and transparent process that promotes quality patient care while allowing for flexibility in meeting quality standards. The final rule addresses the comments received by the CMS on the proposed rule that was published in 2005.
Although hospices will have 180 days before the rule becomes effective, it is recommended that you start preparing now.
