HIPAA TRAINING FOCUS OF SPECIAL AUDIO CONFERENCE
HIPAA education and training requirements, mandated under the law, pose a key challenge for most healthcare organizations. Staff education and training is an integral part of the HIPAA implementation and compliance process.
Strategies for developing HIPAA education plans must address a broad spectrum of issues, according to Robert Jenkins, publisher, HIPAA Bulletin for Management.
Under section § 164.530, of the HIPAA Administrative requirements, there is the requirement for standard training, Jenkins said.
"A covered entity must train all members of its workforce on the policies and procedures with respect to protected health information required by this subpart, as necessary and appropriate for the members of the workforce to carry out their function within the covered entity," according to the regulations.
Although HIPAA education and training is underway among covered entities, one recent industry survey found, much more needs to be done on an ongoing basis to comply with HIPAA provisions.
The survey found that staff education about the new privacy rule is under way; most organizations have held one or two hours of training on HIPAA privacy regulations for the majority of stakeholders, such as physicians, staff, executives and board members, the Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA) said.
Fifty-five percent of respondents indicated their board of directors had received one or two hours of HIPAA education, 52 percent indicate the same for staff, while 46 percent report that medical staff had received one or two hours of training on HIPAA privacy, and 42 percent of executive staff has received the same, according to the survey.
However, the survey also indicated that 43 percent of medical staff, 30 percent of board of directors, 31 percent of staff, and 8 percent of executive staff have received no HIPAA privacy training.
A key component for successful HIPAA implementation and ongoing compliance is the education of your managers and staff.
