What
choices do I have for obtaining the directory information on Managed
Care Organizations?
The National Directory of Managed Care Organizations is available in
print, database on CD-ROM with high-speed search and PDF output, and

we have an "Enrollment Module" which contains more comprehensive statistical

on all aspects of managed care, HMOs, PPOs, POSs, PSOs, and specialty
MCOs. The Directory provides information on 140 third party administrators
if the plans profiled offer TPA services. |
How
is the data collected?
All the data in the National Directory of Managed Care Organizations
has been collected directly from the organizations themselves, by regular
surveys in the mail, by fax and e-mail, state government agencies with
whom plans must file reports, CMS Medicare data, the MCOs' public Web
site postings, other public sources of information, documents we obtain
(annual and quarterly reports) news releases received here, proprietary
data files developed, gathered and maintained by the Managed Care Information
Center, and by extensive telephone interview research by our own staff.

of Managed Care Organizations is the only reference that identifies
and lists:
- Specialty HMOs
and PPOs
- Point of Service
Plans
- Provider Sponsored
Organizations
- Utilization
Review Organizations
- Medicare +
Choice Demonstration Project Plans
- EPOs, ASOs
- Pharmaceutical
Benefit Management Companies
- MCIC has more
information and more years of PPO experience and know-how than any
other source.
- This is not
just a directory of HMOs and PPOs.
Our directories are verified by an in-house, trained professional staff.
At national industry conferences on managed care, we have been told
over and over again that other products available do not compare to
this directory. At trade shows like the NMHCC, users tell us our book
is more current that any other directory.
In fact, we have had several book buyers call and send us letters telling
us that through the use of this directory they have made numerous sales
because of the accuracy of our data. Another thing about our directory
is that we show you the entire picture of the managed care organizations
within the profile. You will be able at a glance tell what products
and benefits that the company provides. Also, a nice feature of our
directory is that there is a comments field where we list important
tracking information such as company name changes, acquisitions, mergers,
etc. So you can see the history of the changes that took place since
our last edition. |
Does
the directory list managed Medicare and Medicaid plans?
Yes, If an organization provides a Medicare or Medicaid plan it is noted
in their profile data. |
Do
you provide enrollment for Medicare and Medicaid?
We do collect this data, but it is not available in the print directory.
However it is available on CD-ROM in our Enrollment Module. |
What
format is your print directory in?
It has perfect bound binding with a soft cover. Its dimensions are 8
1/2 X 11. It has over 600 pages including 8 indexes. |
Who
uses the directory?
Managed care organizations, pharmaceutical companies, integrated healthcare
delivery systems and physician organizations, medical and research libraries,
consultants, executive search firms, information technology companies,
associations and individuals or organizations interested in monitoring
the managed care industry. |
When
was the data collected and when was it published?
Extensive data for the print edition was collected and verified during
the fourth quarter of 2001 and the first and second quarters of 2002.
Changes were being made up until press time. We are consistently contacting
state offices, resurveying the MCOs and monitoring all forms of news
media to uncover changes and additions to our database of MCOs. The
online database is updated with new information as soon as it is received
here. |
What
is the difference between the fourth and the third edition?
There have been as many as 13,000 changes in data from the prior edition.
Changes include mergers and acquisitions, promotions, appointments,
resignations, area code or zipcode changes, service area changes, withdrawal
from Medicare+Choice, new products, or address changes. |
Is
this directory available electronically?
Yes, the directory is available in a database on CD-ROM format that
imports into software programs you already know how to use. You can
import it into Access, Excel, Act, Goldmine, etc. You don't have to
worry about learning a new program. You can search on any field and
print reports from you search results easily. There are more than 197
fields of data. When you license the CD-ROM you receive a package with
field structures for each database that list the fields and what data
each field contains. You receive your data on a CD-ROM with instructions
to easily import into your software. You will be up and running in a
few minutes. The "electronic" edition includes a free six-month update.
A great benefit of the CD-ROM version is that when your order is processed,
you receive the most current data in our database. The CD-ROM is "burned"
the day we ship it to you.
The CD-ROM version is composed of the following databases:
- Main database
-- contains contact information on more than 1,640 MCOs with company
name, address, mailing address, phone, fax, plan type, model type,
type of coverage, benefits covered, statistics (enrollment, revenue,
etc.), service are and more.
- Executive
database -- contains names and exact titles for more than 10,000
executives employed by the MCOs.
- PBM database
-- contains more than 160 listings of pharmacy benefit management
companies with addresses and a contact information.
- PSO database
-- contains approximately 27 provider sponsored organizations contact
information and some statistical data.
|
What
is the "Electronic Advantage"?
The "Electronic Advantage" is that you can do whatever analysis you
choose. You can pull up or use any criterion that meets your specific
information needs. You have easy, mouse click access to company, state,
or region specific market information. |
What
is the difference between the Database on CD-ROM and the print?
The print directory and the Database on CD-ROM contain the same data.
However, database edition is more comprehensive because we are always
adding to it. Also, the CD-ROM can be searched and sorted on any of
the data elements. More organizations are opting to get the database
information this way to insure its accuracy. This also makes it easy
to create mailing lists, telesales cards, or sales territory assignments.
The chief advantage of the CD or online file is that you can manipulate
the data, divide it up by sales region, and identify your greatest prospects.
You can also spot the largest companies with the greatest number of
members\enrollees, or spot the top 25-50 top prospects, cluster sell,
or, carve it up by city or service area. We also try to advise clients
and potential clients of the benefits and cost saving efficiencies of
the CD-ROM version. |
Are
there any updates included in the purchasing of the CD-ROM or Online
Database?
The online database is updated continuously. The database on CD-ROM
comes with a free six- month update. |
How
do I use the Online Database?
We can walk you through a live demo of the online database. It's the
easiest way to see how it is set up and works. It is difficult to obtain
a good overview on the trial data base because of the limited resources.
The live demo is suggested. Best for decision making. |
Is
the Directory on line update daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly?
Regularly as we gather updated information. We are continually updating
information. However, as a practical matter the uploads of the new information
are batched and not done daily but done more often than monthly. |
We
pulled up PPOs for the State of Louisiana and only four came up in the
trial database. Will it pull up every PPO in the state and give us the
above information?
Yes, the search will pull up all plans if you select by state, or you
can filter the search by selecting plans of a certain enrollment size.
|
How
quickly can we become members?
Put the fee on a credit card, and we can have you working in the file
this afternoon. |
Is
enrollment data included?
Yes, in the print book we include the 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and some
2002 total enrollments. We also include 2000 and 2001 net income and
2000 and 2001 total revenue figures.
The National Directory of Managed Care Organizations database on CD-ROM
provides enrollment information on the health plans. Our database also
provides state enrollment by plan. However, our information is much
more complete for HMOs. We do not have as much enrollment data for PPOs.
You can get total enrollment and enrollment by state in our CD-ROM database.
Our print directory offers total enrollment only. |
What
data does the Enrollment Module contain?
The Enrollment Module contains enrollment figures broken down by plan
type (HMO, PPO, POS, etc.) by Type of coverage (Commercial, Individual,
Medicare, Medicaid, Federal Employee Health Benefit Plans-FEHBP, TriCare,
etc.), and geographically by state.
Also included are premiums, net worth, liabilities, assets, total expenses,
administrative expenses. It also contains a commentary field which when
available contains some company history such as mergers, acquisitions,
etc. The Enrollment Module works in conjunction with the standard CD-ROM
module as a supplemental product. When you purchase the Enrollment Module
you will also received a 6-month update of the data contained in this
module. The current Enrollment Module contains 2000 and 2001 data. We
have historical statistical data for year 1995 to 2000 that can be purchased
by year. |
Is
this directory available online?
Yes. The Online Database has a built-in search engine, and includes
the fields that users told us were important. These fields include company
name, actual location, mailing address, key executives, total revenue,
net income, total enrollment, profit status, parent company, model type
(IPA, staff, group, etc.), plan type (HMO, PPO, UR, TPA), and service
area. The benefit of the Online database is that it has an easy to use
search engine that you select what you want to search on and it displays
your search results. With the Online database you can search on any
combination of:
1. plan type (HMO, PPO, etc.)
2. company name
3. total enrollment
4. state enrollment
5. service area
6. model type (IPA, staff, group, etc.)
Benefits of the
Online database are:
1. Data is constantly updated -- when you use the data you will have
information from our most current files.
2. The database can be accessed from wherever you are as long as you
have online access.
3. The built in search engine allows for doing easy multiple searches
without having to learn all the details of how to use the features
of a database or spreadsheet program.
4. The search results can be saved as ASCII text to your desk top
and you can import your findings into other programs for further research.

How
complete is the directory?
Although we try to be as accurate as possible, no publisher of this
kind of information has 100% of the fields full. We have been told by
buyers that we have the most complete and comprehensive data available.
To insure that your managed care data file is as complete as possible,
we devote thousands of hours each year to the most thorough research
gathering including telephone interviews with the managed care plan
executives. The rate of change among contact names within managed care
organizations is more than double the normal attrition, our research
staff has found. Any data you're using that's over a year old is woefully
out-of-date.
The managed care industry is very fluid and transient. Most direct marketing
experts agree that at any given time any list can have an up to 20 percent
"nixie" rate. (Undeliverable as addressed, addressee no longer there,
bad address or zip code.) We take collecting the data very seriously.
We are constantly adding new fields of information to our databases
each year. Despite our very thorough data gathering research and rounds
of verification, it is unrealistic to believe that a print directory
can ever possibly be 100 percent current after a couple of months of
going to the printer.
Even now, in between editions, there are HMOs being sold, merged, or
going out of business. We get names of new executive appointments and
promotions weekly. Names of MCOs change, they exit the Medicare+Choice
managed care program, telephone company area codes continue to change,
and plans expand or shrink service areas.
We advise executives who wish to use our database for ongoing sales
efforts, mailings or telemarketing, that a more cost effective investment
would be our National Directory of Managed Care Organizations Database
on CD-ROM. It costs more, but it is kept up to date on a regular basis
here and is as current as can be when it is delivered to you. The database
on CD-ROM contains the same size and deep profile information that is
found in our print directory. |
How
soon can the Database on CD-ROM be put together and shipped?
We ship your database by overnight carrier. You'll always get the freshest
data, name and company changes, with the CD-ROM choice. The Database
on CD-ROM is "burned" with the most current data, the day we ship your
order. |
Is
the information on the database copyrighted?
The National Directory of Managed Care Organizations Database is protected
under copyright laws. You may use the database for building mailing
lists and/or for telemarketing is permitted under the license agreement.
You are allowed unlimited use at your desktop for the full year of
the license. If more than one person will be using the database, that
user must have a license to comply with our license and copyright
laws.

shipping if the directories were being shipped to just one location.
